Primary schools within the Bases and the Republic of Cyprus have been raising awareness about bullying by taking part in a poster campaign to coincide with the UK’s anti-bullying week, which ran between November 16–20.

Children aged between 6 and 11, from Episkopi Primary in the Bases and Erimi village primary, were tasked with drawing pictures that best represented this year’s theme of ‘united against bullying’ — an issue that negatively impacts millions of children over the world on a daily basis.

Terry Fazackerley, the assistant headteacher at Episkopi Primary School, explained why it is so important to raise the issue of bullying.

He said: “This year, more than ever, we’ve witnessed the positive power that society can have when we come together to tackle a common challenge. Anti-Bullying Week is no different. Bullying has a long-lasting effect on those who experience and witness it. But by channelling our collective power, through shared efforts and shared ambitions, we can reduce bullying together.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Marianna Andreou, the headteacher at Erimi Primary School ‘Panicos Hadjihambis’, who revealed the students had understood and embraced the anti-bullying message.

She explained: “School bullying is not a new phenomenon, for this reason we must unite our voices and eliminate it together’’.
